National Lock Your Gun Day: Vaughn Biglow Jr.’s Memory and Legacy Live On

July 8th, 2024, is National Lock Your Gun Day, and what would’ve been Bubba’s 20th birthday.

As we reflect on what this day means to us, we’d like to share the story behind National Lock Your Gun Day and how we’ve worked to create positive change in our communities so that no one else needs to join this club or stare at the urn of ashes on their living room shelf.

The Story Behind National Lock Your Gun Day

On June 14, 2018, 13-year-old Vaughn Scott Bigelow Jr. was tragically shot and killed in Westminster, Colorado, during a road rage incident. The shooter, who had followed his mom’s, Meghan Bigelow, car into a parking lot, opened fire, killing Vaughn and injuring his mom and brother, Asa. This senseless act of violence devastated the Bigelow family and shook our community to its core.

In the wake of their loss, Vaughn Jr.’s family channeled their grief into action. They founded Big Waves Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting gun safety and supporting victims of gun violence. One of their key initiatives was the establishment of National Lock Your Gun Day, observed annually on July 8th, Vaughn Jr.'s birthday, or Bubba as we affectionately call him.

The message behind Lock Your Gun Day is simple yet powerful: properly securing firearms can prevent accidents, thefts, and tragedies. By encouraging gun owners to use locks, safes, and other security measures, the initiative aims to reduce the risk of guns falling into the wrong hands, being accessed by children, or by giving those ready to commit suicide a few extra minutes to reconsider.

Making BIG Waves

At Big Waves Inc., we continue to look and strive for ways we can make an impact in our community and beyond when it comes to preventing gun violence, promoting gun safety and sensibility, and supporting the mental health of our youth.

Here are just a few of the highlights from the last six years—

1. Gun Lock Distribution: Big Waves Inc. has partnered with local law enforcement agencies and community organizations to distribute 3,000 free gun locks, making it easier for gun owners to secure firearms.

2. Gun Safety Training: Big Waves has funded and supported nearly 30 youth gun safety training workshops over the last six years, educating thousands of individuals and families.

3. Community Engagement: Through events like the Courage Classic bike ride for ARCH at Children's Hospital Colorado, and the Big Waves Golf Tournament, Big Waves raised awareness and funds for those affected by gun violence.

4. Vaughn Bigelow Jr. Scholarship Award: This scholarship honors Vaughn's memory by supporting student atheletes who embody his spirit of leadership, kindness, and community service. Previous recipients have studied fields such as nursing, education, and social work, carrying forward Vaughn's legacy of helping others. It has provided financial support for these students and created a network of young leaders committed to making a positive impact in their communities.

5. Community Partnerships: Collaborations with partners like Adams County Health and Be Smart with Moms Demand Action, we’ve expanded the reach of gun safety by donating gun locks nationwide at tabling events. And with Vitalant, we’ve hosted numerous blood drives to ensure no one goes with the critical care they need.

Looking Ahead…

At the heart of National Lock Your Gun Day are memories of Bubba. He was a bright, energetic teenager with a passion for water polo and a knack for making others laugh. He was a natural leader with a kind heart and a contagious smile.

Vaughn’s story and the movement that arose from our tragic loss serve as powerful reminders of the importance of gun safety and the potential for positive change in the face of adversity.

As we move forward, we’ll continue to honor Vaughn Jr.’s memory by promoting sensible gun ownership, supporting those affected by gun violence, and working towards a safer future for all.

National Lock Your Gun Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It's a call to action, a tribute to a life lost, and a beacon of hope for a future where such tragedies can be prevented. By locking our guns and spreading awareness, we can all play a part in creating safer communities and ensuring that Bubba’s legacy continues to make waves of positive change.
